Cabins 138 was conceived as a mindful response to the fast-paced modern world. Nestled gently on the terraced hills of Nuwara Eliya, our property was designed using sustainably harvested timber, natural stone foundations, and expansive panoramic glass that brings the lush mountain terrain right into your room.
Rather than a conventional monolithic concrete hotel, we chose cozy standalone timber cabins and loft suites that minimize ecological impact. Each cabin features private balconies, deep duvet bedding engineered for cool alpine nights, and handcrafted furniture created by skilled local carpenters from the Central Province.
Our kitchen celebrates farm-to-table highland gastronomy: crisp Nuwara Eliya baby carrots, leeks, potatoes, and freshly picked highland strawberries, paired with world-class Ceylon tea harvested right from neighboring estates.
Nuwara Eliya: The "City of Light"
Resting at an elevation of 1,868 meters (6,128 feet), Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's highest and coolest major town, nestled under the shadow of Mount Pidurutalagala (2,524 m).
"Little England" Heritage
Founded in 1846 by explorer Sir Samuel Baker as a sanatorium for British colonists seeking refuge from the tropical heat of the coast. Baker introduced English vegetables, fruits, and livestock. The town grew to feature Tudor mansions, red-roofed cottages, a 1889 golf course, and a colonial racecourse that still host spring festivals today.
Birthplace of Ceylon Tea
In the late 1860s, a fungal blight destroyed Sri Lanka's coffee industry. Planters turned to tea, pioneered by James Taylor in 1867. Nuwara Eliya's misty microclimate, high altitude, and mineral-rich soils gave birth to the finest orthodox Ceylon Black Tea—celebrated worldwide for its light golden liquor and delicate floral bouquet.
Subtropical Highland Climate
Categorized under the Köppen Cwb subtropical highland climate, Nuwara Eliya enjoys year-round temperate weather. Average daytime temperatures range between 15°C and 20°C, while nights frequently drop to 9°C–12°C. In January and February, rare ground frosts paint the plains in shimmering white.
UNESCO Central Highlands Biodiversity Hotspot
The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Comprising Peak Wilderness Protected Area, Horton Plains National Park, and the Knuckles Conservation Forest, this region is an extraordinary global center of endemism.

- Maha Rathmal (Rhododendron arboreum zeylanicum): Striking crimson blossoms that thrive on the misty grasslands of Horton Plains and Hakgala.

The 1894 Red Brick Tudor Post Office
One of the oldest postal buildings in Sri Lanka. Located right in the heart of the town, this red-brick Tudor building with a clock spire was constructed in 1894 by the British colonial administration and remains fully functional today.
The Hill Club & Grand Hotel
Established in 1876 as a gentlemen's club for British tea planters, The Hill Club still preserves colonial dining etiquette, billiard rooms, and stuffed trophies. The neighboring Grand Hotel, originally the residence of Governor Sir Edward Barnes, displays splendid Elizabethan architecture.
Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (Founded 1889)
One of Asia's most venerable 18-hole golf courses, set amid tall fir trees, gorse banks, and sparkling mountain streams. It preserves a historic English club atmosphere nestled right against the hills.
Nuwara Eliya Racecourse
Established in 1875 by Governor William Gregory, this remains the only operational horse racing venue in Sri Lanka, hosting the annual Governor's Cup and Queen's Cup during the April festivities.
