Responsible Trekking & Eco-Guidelines

Sri Lanka's Central Highlands are an irreplaceable global biodiversity sanctuary. We encourage all our guests to follow the official Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) principles.

Responsible Travel Practices

  • Leave No Trace: Pack out all wrappers, containers, and personal items. Never discard waste in ravines or waterways.
  • Bring Reusable Water Bottles: Horton Plains rigorously forbids single-use polythene and plastic bottles. Park staff will decant your water into paper bags or reusable flasks.
  • Stay on Designated Trails: Fragile montane flora such as dwarf bamboo and endemic rhododendrons take decades to recover if trampled.
  • Observe Wildlife Quietly: Do not shout, feed, or approach Sambar deer or monkeys. Maintain a respectful distance.

What to Strictly Avoid

  • No Open Campfires in Protected Areas: Open flames are strictly prohibited inside national parks and forest reserves due to dry montane wind fire hazards.
  • No Flash Photography at Night: Never shine intense lights or flash into wildlife habitats after dusk.
  • Do Not Collect Flowers or Seeds: Removing wild orchids, ferns, or endemic Maha Rathmal flowers is illegal under Sri Lankan wildlife laws.
  • No Loud Music on Trails: Preserve the tranquility of nature for fellow hikers and nesting birds.
